NINANINA Jazz Band is the creative partnership of vocalist-guitarist NINA GERAGHTY and bassist/music-producer HENRY SHIELDS, joined by local jazz musicians as the event requires.
NINA GERAGHTY, known for her velvet and smoke jazz voice, creates the arrangements of well-known jazz love songs. Her musical roots include singing the role of Mary Magdalene in Jesus Christ Superstar, Sally in Cabaret, and was a regular entertainer at renowned venues such as Durban’s The Edward Hotel’s Grapevine and The Maharani’s Raffles nightclub.
HENRY SHIELDS is a musical force whose career spans global jazz productions, cultural diplomacy, and iconic venues. He’s the founder of Cape Town’s legendary Green Dolphin jazz restaurant and producer of Africa’s largest jazz festival. A seasoned bassist and visionary, Henry’s musical resume includes collaborations with The Supremes, the African Jazz Pioneers, and the Brubeck family.
Whether it’s bossa nova, swing, ballads or the blues, upbeat and dancy or softly melodic, you’ll hear songs from other eras (we have an absurd affinity for songs written before 1949), a legacy created by the songwriters, musicians and performers that made jazz such a compelling genre: Cole Porter, Duke Ellington, Ella Fitzgerald, Billie Holiday, Astrud Gilberto, Antonio Jobim, Hoagy Carmichael, Burt Bacharach.
Oh, and we tune to 432Hz - we think it makes good vibes even better!
We don’t deliver imitations, we get inspired and create our own distinctive arrangements. So yes, we’re niche. Yet we’re pretty sure you’ll recognise just about every tune.
